Can Bras Be Dry-Cleaned?

It is important to care for your bra so that you can keep it looking new as long as possible. Not all bras are made from the same material, so the type of bra will ultimately determine how it should be cared for in regard to washing. Always read the label that is attached to your garment.

Some people prefer to dry clean special clothing, but not everything can or should be dry-cleaned. One of those is a bra. The best way to preserve a bra is to hand-wash it.

How to Hand Wash a Bra

By hand-washing your bra you are ensuring that it lasts longer. The process if very simple. First, fill the sink with cold water and add a small amount of soap. Undo the claps of the bra, put it in the sink and let it soak for about 20 minutes. Then gently hand-wash it, making sure that the under wire stays in place. Drain the soapy water from the sink and fill with clean water. Then rinse until all the soap is removed. Drain the water from the sink and hold the bra under cold running water. Then blot the bra with a clean towel and lay it on a flat surface. It will take at least an hour to fully dry, probably more, depending on the humidity of the air.

Other Ways to Clean Your Bra

Although hand-washing your bra is a very effective method, sometimes you may not have the time to do it. In these cases there are other ways to keep your bra clean and fresh. You can wash it in a washing machine, but you must take some precaution. A handy item to keep at home is pre-wash spray, put a little on the sweat stains. Close the hooks on the bra and tuck one cup into the other, then put it into a bra bag. You can either use your favourite laundry detergent or a few cups of baby shampoo in the washer. When you choose laundry detergent, make sure that it is mild and not too rough on the fabric. Use the shortest and gentlest cycle. When complete, lay the bra on a flat surface to dry.

Tips for Washing Your Bra

  • Bra bags are essential if you plan to wash your bras in a machine. Without bags, your bras will get damaged.
  • Baby shampoo is a good alternative to laundry detergent, but don't use it on sports bras.
  • Always read the care instructions on the label taht is attached to the bra. Bras come in many different fabrics, so washing instructions may be vary.
