Caring For Your Swimwear

People think that it is ok to neglect their swimwear because it is small and worn less often than regular clothing. However, swimwear can easily be torn and become faded if it is not taken care of properly. The first mistake often made with swimwear is allowing it to be attacked by washing machines. It is too easy to toss the clothing into the machine but this process dramatically weakens the fabric. Swimwear loses its elasticity when exposed to hot water so the best way to maintain your beloved bikini is to hand wash it after first soaking it in cold water.

Effect of Beach and Sea on Swimwear

The beach and sea can also have a negative effect on swimwear. Its fabric does not react well to the chemicals it gets exposed to regularly. For instance, if you are swimming in a pool, the chlorine will affect it while sea salt also weakens swimwear. Rinse your bikini well before bathing in the sea or a pool as this will make sure less absorption of chemicals. The swimwear should also be rinsed afterwards to wash away existing chemicals. Failure to do this will result in the colour starting to fade.

Even an innocuous towel could cause damage to swimwear. Do not wrap a towel around you because its fibres will mix with those of the swimwear. Heated moisture caused by the towel is another problem because it causes colours to bleed. Instead, you should sit on the towel and not the rocks because rough surfaces like this will actually tear the fabric of the swimwear.

Drying Swimwear in the Sun

One of the most common mistakes made is to allow the sun to dry swimwear. Again, this seems like an easy solution but in actual fact, the sun's heat is responsible for many faded bikinis. Do not relax in the sun as a means of drying your swimwear. Be sensible and stay in the shade as this protects your clothes from fading and your skin from burning.

Stains on Swimwear

When stains appear on your swimwear, do not attempt to rub them off as this only causes the stain to spread. Put pressure on the swimwear instead to pull out the offending stain. Leaving two wet pieces of different colour swimwear in the same bag is asking for trouble as colour is extremely likely to be transferred. This is a quick and easy way to ruin more than one piece of swimwear at the same time.
