The Development of Mens Swimwear Design

Looking back through the history of mens swimwear it is possible to see the roots of modern swimwear design. Some of the earliest records of public bathing and swimming date back to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. In Europe we can see original mosaics and murals which show both men and women bathing some in the nude, and others wearing simple bathing suits.

The path of history was to slow the development of mens swimwear considerably laws of decency and attitudes regarding morals changed dramatically with the demise of the Roman empire, and increased influence of the Christian church.

It was not until the late 1800s when mens swimwear experienced a revival. Mens swimsuits at this time were made of thick wool, which remained opaque when soaked through. The woollen tabard type garments would have been heavy when wet, clinging to the skin and restricting movement not ideal for energetic swimming sessions. Later, long-sleeved mens bathing suits which consisted of trousers and a top were popular.

By the 19th Century mens swimwear became more revealing. Many men saw fit to do away with the top half of their bathing suits and legs were revealed in shorts, similar to the trunks of today.

20th Century fashion design shook up the design of mens swimwear forever. Speedos the tight-fitting trunk which is popular with athletes were an Australian invention, which gave men the chance to swim without excessive fabric slowing their movements. Today men can choose from an excellent selection of swimwear from top mens swimwear designers such as Speedo, Funky Trunks and Jets.

Mens Swimwear for Sport & Recreation

The latest mens swimwear is designed to offer optimum comfort and style, whether you take part in competitive swimming events, enjoy regular keep-fit sessions at the local pool, or spend weekends playing with your kids on the beach. Board shorts, swim trunks and swim briefs (a.k.a. "Speedos") are the most common styles of mens swimwear available. These styles each offer a different level of coverage, and may be designed for an athletic or fun-loving look.

Loose fitting, long-length boardies are popular with young, energetic males and have a surf-casual look which will work well with a singlet, whether you can handle yourself on the waves or not. Trunks are closely-fitted, showing more leg than boardshorts for a streamlined look, while briefs offer the least coverage of all. Design features from the world of performance swimwear, such as high-performance fabric, chlorine resistant swimwear and tie waists mean whichever mens swimwear look you choose, you can feel cool, confident and ready for action!
