Bonds Underwear places comfort, movement, breathability and fit beside cool, practical design to deliver a men's underwear collection that brings out the Chesty Bond guy in every man!
The History of Bonds Men's Underwear
American George Bond started growing the cotton and spinning and dyeing and weaving the fabric to make Bonds underwear in Australia way back in 1923. The Men's Cotton Athletic Singlet was the original Bonds product , as worn by Chesty Bond and still synonymous with the brand today.
In 1928 aviators Charles Kingsford-Smith ( called the world's greatest aviator for his record-breaking early flights) and Charles Ulm were supplied with Bonds Athletic Singlets and woollen underwear for their first historic flight across the Pacific and the letter of thanks post-flight from the two men to George Bond was ultimately incorporated in Bonds' earliest advertising.
Iconic Bonds Men's Underwear
In 1938 Bonds asked its advertising agency, J. Walter Thompson, to develop a campaign for the athletic singlets and the result was a cartoon character loosely based on Popeye. Chesty Bond became a superhero, not when he ate spinach, but when he put on his Bonds singlet.
Immediately the public response to the character was overwhelmingly positive and such was his enormous popularity that Chesty Bond became a comic strip that lasted for 20 years!
Chesty is still around, although his powerful jutting jaw and impressive physique have been tempered over the decades to represent a more modern rendering of the typical Aussie Bonds bloke.
By 1960, Bonds had sold the 50 millionth Chesty Bond Singlet.
Famous Men's Underwear by Bonds
An Aussie Tennis Champ and an Aussie Cricket Wunderkind - these two quintessential Australian blokes and super sportsmen have stripped down to their underwear in many campaigns and on the catwalk for the true blue Bonds brand!
Just like Chesty, the archetypal Australian hero, Rafter and Clarke have both cemented their reputations in athletic pursuits and earned the 'champion' tag. In 1988 Rafter became the first Australian to win back-to back US titles since Neale Fraser in 1959-60 and Clarke debuted for Australia against India in 2004 scoring an impressive 151 runs (18 fours and 4 sixes) in his first innings!
