Watersun

It’s always exciting to witness the unveiling of each new season’s apparel collections, with all their design elements reflecting the very latest in fashion, and the launch of Watersun’sknockout Swimwear Collection ticks all the right boxes. The titan of Australian swimwear design, with a huge international reputation, Watersun, has over 50 such seasons and launches under its belt and the latest Collection is another inspired celebration of current trends in exclusive swimwear design. So much so that Vogue.com.au wasted no time placing the new range in its top 20 swimwear picks! The Collection boasts luxurious fabrics and exclusive trims with designers selecting lush greens, fabulous blues and dazzling yellows influenced by the diverse Australian landscape and bold patterns, botanical themes and vintage florals to reflect the people and the lifestyle. Aussie-born Pania Rose may be an international supermodel but as the face, and body, of Watersunshe’s a perfect fit to showcase this ultra contemporary, uniquely Australian and strikingly sophisticated Collection.

The Watersun Story – History of Australian Swimwear

When Paula Stafford pressed the Gold Coast city elders to concede that her home-made bikinis were not indecent when paraded on Surfers Paradise beach in 1952, she opened the door for Australian swimwear designers to innovate beyond the traditional classic, and modest, one-piece swimsuit.

In Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, object A9331 is on display. It’s a Watersun one-piece swimsuit c. 1960. Half a century on from its creation, this ruched and boned vintage piece in lush gold lamé has made its way from the beach into a prized collection of Aussie icons, representing not only an era in Australian swimwear but also the attention to design, tailoring and high fashion that are the hallmarks of Watersun.

The detailed list of Object A9331’s design specifications is testimony to the infinite degree of thought that Watersun’s designers have always applied to their creations: - it has a back zip, detachable straps, a V insert from bust to mid-ruched-stomach and much, much more! Beyond that, it is a confection of gold lamé and lurex that was at the vanguard of swimwear fashion five decades ago.

The brand, Watersun, arrived on the Australian market in the 1960s with the local design and manufacture of swimwear and beach fashion and throughout the next three decades was the name synonymous with fashion, quality and affordability in women’s swimwear.

Watersun Today

Re-launched as an exclusive swimwear brand in 2004, Watersun and its talented designers continue to work to the belief that every woman is entitled to look and feel magnificent in their choice of swimwear.

Aussie-born International supermodel, Pania Rose, was selected as the new face of Watersunand embodies all of the attributes of the brand – contemporary, glamorous, fun, inspired, memorable and quintessentially, Australian.

Sourcing the best fabrics from Europe, Asia, the US and Australia and uniquely tailoring every exclusive piece with fine detailing, every range reflects not only the season’s myriad style and colour options but stays true to the brand’s Australian origins.

The Watersun Collection

The 2010 Collection, previewed at IMG Fashion Week at Queensland’s Sanctuary Cove, made a real 'splash' with local and International fashionistas. Watersunwas included in the Top 20 swimwear picks by Vogue.com.au and received extensive coverage in Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and featured on the Chic Channel and Fashion TV.

The Colours of Australia

Drawing inspiration from the landscape, the climate and the people, this season’s inspiration gloriously reflects the diversity of the colours of an Australian summer – lush greens, sand and sunshine yellows and golds and a dazzling spectrum of blues.

Prints incorporate everything from rich plains and contrasts to bold and geometric to floral-inspired and frilly. The range is so diverse and extensive Watersun seems to have thought of everything – and everyone!

Attention to Detail

These days the boning may have been replaced with more comfortable and practical aesthetics (thankfully for us!) but the fine quality and thoughtful designs, the trimmings, the textures and the attention to even the smallest detail make each piece so, so stylish.

On the practical side, look for clever tie-backs for maximum adjustability, removable cups, moulded booster cups, dyed-to-match linings and high quality European trims.

New Stories, New Styles

Watersun’sdesigners have focused on fewer stories in order to create even more styles with greater variety. This season’s range of bikinis, monokinis, tankinis, maillots, mix-and-match tops and bottoms, maternity and mastectomy swimwear, plus size swimsuits and cover-ups and accessories definitely tick all the boxes for style when it comes to current trends in swimwear. Not only that, the pieces are each as far away from cookie-cutter designs as is possible and the thing that comes through loud and clear is that Watersun designers know that their customers have different personalities and tastes and they have created the 2010 range with a huge sense of fun!
